Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

IPC MEDIA- (international publishing company)
IPC produce over 60 iconic media brands. I think they should publish my RNB and Hip-Hop magazine as they do not have a magazine of my genre. However they do publish the magazine NME which is a rock and pop genre. Therefore it won’t be a massive jump. By doing this they will be expanding their business as they originally only cater for leisure sport and lifestyle magazines, publishing a RNB and Hip-Hop magazine will gain them more customers. This will result in them receiving higher profits that will benefit their business. By expanding their business they will be filling up the gap in the market and will also be seen as highly competitive.

Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Young people are represented stereotypically in my magazine, this is because one of my features for my magazine is fashion. This is stereotypical for young people as they are interested in fashion. The fashion in my magazine appeals to young people’s tastes. Also featured in my magazine are the “Best Albums Of All Times”, this stereotypes young people as they are constantly wanting to be kept updated with the latest trends and gossip. The use of my website, www.beatz.com also represents my target audience as they are able to use the internet. This shows me that they are familiar in using ICT, resulting to my media product representing the younger age that use technology on a daily basis.

Young people are strongly stereotyped on my contents page. This is because the male featured on my magazine is dressed as a typical RNB and Hip-Hop artist. This stereotypes young people as they also dress in the same way. The brands worn also stereotype young people as they also wear the same popular brands, i.e. Nike.  The image of the male with headphones is also dressed in a stereotypical way on how most RNB and Hip-Hop artists are represented. This shows me that the people who buy my magazine will also be interested with this type of clothing and will be able to relate to it.

However, in my double page spread, my interviewee uses formal language. This subverts stereotypes because usually in RNB and Hip-Hop magazines, artists speak in slang or colloquialism. The interviewee featured in my double page spread is not stereotyped as a usual teenager as she is not materialistic. This is because in her interview she says that “money can’t buy you happiness.” Most young people are seen as being materialistic; however my artist subverts this stereotype.

Overall, my magazine represents both male and female genders and is mostly targeted towards the younger age. I think that I have met my target audience and social group as in my magazine I have elements that provide for them both.

Production Log 5

I am now in the process of adding the final touches to my double page spread. I have also taken the left over contents pictures and have edited them on Photoshop. I am planning to finish the production of my magazine and start my evaluation in the next few days.

Production Log 4

Today I started to make my double page spread, I have my interview set out the way I want it. I just need to add in the edited version of my artist. I am still waiting to take one more picture for my contents page, so it is not finished yet.

Production Log 3

I have now taken my pictures for my contents and my double page spread. I am planning to edit them on Photoshop within this week.

Production Log 2

I have now finished my front cover for my RNB and Hip-Hop magazine, so I have started on my contents page. By using my research and planning I already knew what features and headings I wanted to use. I laid out my text, the way I thought was appropriate. However, I still need to take my pictures for my contents page.

Production Log 1

Today I took pictures of my main artist for my front cover. I also used Photoshop to edit my picture which was quite difficult, but by using the magnetic lasso tool it became easier. I also chose the font that I wanted to use for my sell lines and started to create my magazine.

Positions

Here are some of my ideas on how i want my model to pose. The style is chosen by other R&B artists. I want to experiment with different poses to see which pose suites my magazine the most. And as my magazine is an R&B music magazine i think that these poses suit my genre. The use of Mise-en-scene has also shown me how my model should be dressed and what sort of props i need to include in my pictures.

I think that Font number 7 looks best for my magazine, (Beatz). this is because it looks like a font that would appear as a title on an R&B music magazine as it is big, bold and it stands out allot. i found that fonts such as number 8 (Beatz) and number 11 Beatz) would look best if it weas a classical magazine. I would also like to try and add jewels to my title to make it unique and to make it stand out.

Magazine Colour Ideas

Colours for My Magazine

Contents Features

This is a brainstorm on what is going to be featured in my R&B music magazine. I did this by researching different contents pages and seeing what was featured in their magazine. All magazines that I researched had the "gigs/concerts" and "interviews." therefore in my magazine I am going to make sure that I have both features in my magazine,

Magazine Names

Here I have brainstormed possible names for my R&B music magazine. The names "amplifier" and "beats" looked most appealing to me, so therefore in my focus group I gave the choice between the two. The other names in my brainstorm were done by thinking of words that associate with R&B and Hip-Hop.

Front Page Sketch One

This sketch is a plan on how I want my front page of my R&B music magazine to look like. The main image will be in the middle so the audience can focus on it, with the sell lines surrounding it. The magazines name will be behind the main image but still visible, with the mast head on top. The biggest sell line will be on the main image to show the audience what the main story line is.

Front Page Sketch Two

This is my second front page sketch. I want sell lines to surround my main image and i also want additional images to surround the main image so that my audience know what else is featured in my magazine. The masthead and title will be in the top left hand corner and will have a big font so that it appeals catchy towards my audience.

Contents Page Sketch

This is a sketch of my R&B music magazines contents page. In the bottom left hand corner, I am going to have an editorial; this is because in the magazines that I researched, most had an editorial. The biggest image on the contents page is going to be on the main story, and the other small stories are going to be on the right. The feature list is going to be in the middle so that it is the first thing the audience will see.

Double Page Sketch One

This is a sketch of one of my double page spreads. I want to have one main image and two floating quotes with additional images. The title will be at the top of the page. I took this idea by looking at other RNB music magazines.

Double Page Sketch Two

This is my second double page spread sketch. i want my double page spread to have additional images to keep the audience more interested and i also want a main image to make sure that my audience know who the interview is about without having to read the interview first. I also want to make sure that i have a subheading where i can tell the audience what the interview is going to be about without them having to read all of it. Therefore if they do like what the interview is about they will want to read on more.

Focus Group

Double Page Analysis One

This double page spread is taken from the music magazine NME. The first thing that would catch the audience’s eyes is the main picture and the title of article, which is a floating quote from the article itself. The main image would attract the audience as it would allow them to see what the article is about without reading it fully, by doing this, the audience as able to see if they can recognise the artist and to see if they would want to read the article. The title has a rough newspaper look, which goes with Lily Allen’s features. As she is dressed in scruffy bold clothes and her make up being very dark, it shows major comparison with the title as it gives of the same affect. Her clothing is very masculine as she is wearing a fully covered tartan shirt; however she styles it out with the use of jewellery. Both the title and the main picture are taking up the majority of the double page spread stressing on the important of both of them. It is still eye catching as it is the main thing you can see. Her pose with her hands on her waist also allows the audience to see her tattoo on her wrist, this shows the audience that she stereotypes with other artists as many RNB and hip hop artists have tattoos. Her body language allows the audience to see that she is in control and has power. Lily Allen is looking straight at the audience showing them that she is addressing them directly and again stresses with the fact that she is very brave and strong, showing her masculinity.
The structure of the page is very simple and easy to read as the interview is shown in just the bottom left. The interview is very short, showing us that there is not much information in it.  The article is written in columns making it easier for the audience to read the magazine, and it is also a feature that is common to all magazines.
The language in the article is very simple and also shows colloquialism. This shows us that the target audience of the magazine itself is the ages 13 to 20. The type of language would make the reader feel more involved and interested in the article because they would be able to understand it and interpret it.
The colours used in this double page spread are very limited as it only uses red white and black. The black and white again stresses with the newspaper theme. The red shirt that Lily Allen is wearing is the only attractive colour on the page, this allows the audience to automatically look at her as it is the only form of contrast they can see, and it attracts them. The black boxed text contrasts the white background, making it very easy for the audience to read the interview and to focus on the main image.
The interview itself is written in black, as the name Lily Allen is written in bold red it allows the reader to see who the interview is about. If they couldn’t recognise the artist by the picture, they would automatically see the highlighted name Lily Allen and know that the interview is about her, without having to read it all first.

Double Page Analysis Two

This double page spread is taken from the music magazine XXL. The main image is of a band named “The XX.” The theme of the magazine is very mysterious and secretive; i say this because the colours used are very dull and bland, giving of a very dark and shadowy vibe. The language used in this extract is very formal as it is in Standard English, showing us that the target audience would be of a more mature age and would be able to understand this form of writing. The article is written as a continuous prose which is normally used for journalism and is unconventional for a RNB music magazine and not as a Q&A, which is what we would normally expect in a RNB music magazine, this therefore shows us that the target audience of this article is mostly presented to an older audience.
The big masthead and long subheading is very unconventional as it is very unusual for a music magazine, this is because it restricts the amount of space for the vital information on the band. As the subheading is very long, it can be seen as a mini introduction, this is beneficial to the audience as they can see what the article is going to be about.
The use of rhetorical questions in the introduction allows the reader to think about the question and to come up with the answer in their head, this makes them feel more involved and helps them interpret what the article is going to be about. This saves them time as they only have to read the introduction to find out what the main article is about, and if they find it interesting then they may want to read on.  The typography in the article is kept very constant and simple, making it easier for the audience to read the article. The only change in the style of writing is when the magazine writes the name of their magazine, NME in italic, this reinforces the reader that they are reading a NME magazine.
The main image of the group shows that the woman is placed in the centre of the image beside the two men; this shows us that they are protecting her. She is portrayed as androgynous, as she is dressed very manly and her hair is cut short. She and the man on the left hand side are looking directly at the camera showing direct address, this shows the audience that they are bold and brave and that they aren’t afraid of anything. However the man on the right hand side is looking down and away from the camera, this shows the audience that he lacks confidence and is the most venerable out of them all. The band’s name “the XX,” shows us that they are very rebellious and provocative; this shows us that the target audience of the magazine are targeted towards adults from 18 onwards who experience this sort of behaviour and are familiar to it.  The body language of the band shows us that they are very expletive and disobedient.

Contents Page Analysis One

The features on the contents page show us that the target audience of the magazine is for both male and female; this is because in the fashion section, vibe caters for both male and female. In all vibe contents pages there is always a V on the background. This makes the audience aware that they are looking at a vibe magazine. The artist Ciara, who is featured in the contents page, has her legs in a V shape. This again reinforces that the magazine is by vibe. Vibe has 3 contents pages; the 1/3 shows the audience which page they are on. They do this to allow them to have one main image on the contents page. The audience can focus on just that one image. The way the woman on the magazine is posed gives of a seductive vibe, which allows the audience to see that she is flaunting her famine features.
The target audience can be both women and men, this is because, the seductive pose attracts men, as she is seen as a sex symbol and could also be for women because they could see her as a role model. The way Ciara is presented in the magazine goes with the feminine film critic Laura Mulvey, she argued “To-be-looked-at-ness”, which meant that the male benefited with the way women were presented in media and films as they were shown to offer visual pleasure. However, this is not to say that the women audiences are completely alienated as they can see her as being an empowered woman and they will be able to identify with her. Gratifications theorists claim that audiences consume music and other forms of media as they want to be able to identify with them.
The colour schemes used in this contents page are very dull, as they only use different shades of black and white. These colours attract a specific target audience of being older as they aren’t too bright. The language is written in informal; this could be because of the target audience.

Contents Page Analysis Two

NME's contents page is much organised as it has subheadings of the information in the magazine, for example, it has a News, Reviews and Features categorised into different parts. The main picture on the contents page is of the Astoria which is one of the main venues for gigs in London and is well known worldwide. on the left hand side in red are names of bands that are going to be in the magazine, with the page number that they are going to be featured on, this is a very organised structure as the audience can just look up the band or artist that they want to read about and go straight to that page. This also shows us that this magazine is quite big as it has such a large number of artists and bands to cover in the magazine. This contents page is targeted more towards the age range of 18-30, I say this because this age range would know about the Astoria and may have visited it. The advertising on the bottom of the contents page attracts the reader in as it is seemed as a reward; this is because if they sign up to the magazine, then they would save £45, this might convince them to subscribe to the magazine. on the right hand side at the bottom it shows the audience that the magazine has a guide for Uk's number 1 gigs, this shows us that the magazine is targeted to people who are interested in attending gigs. The layout and composition is busy which is very effective and attracting. The colour scheme used is red, black and white. As these colours contrast each other it stands out. The colours show the brand identity which runs through the magazine which automatically identifies to the audience that it is an NME magazine. The category “Live!” has an exclamation mark at the end of it, shows us that it is an exclusive feature in the magazine, which may draw in the reader

Front Cover Analysis One

The magazine "Vibe" is founded by the producer Quincy Jones. The magazine specialises in R&B and hip-hop music, also covering artists, actors and other entertainers from these genres.  The magazine production closed down in summer 2009, and was purchased by a private equity investment fund called InterMedia Partners.
The masthead is very catchy as it uses alliteration, “cool, crazy and crass.” The use of it draws the audience in and it sticks into the readers head. The title “Vibe” connotes colloquialism as it conveys a musical element, which can be interpreted as a way of identifying the youth. The front cover adhere the conventions of other music magazines within the same genre because many other music magazines have the same layout.
The main image of the magazine is Keri Hilson. The use of mise-en-scene is very vital, she is wearing a leather hat, which looks like an upgraded version of a police hat, this could add to the sell line of her being a “a very bad girl”. The use of jewellery or “bling” shows us that the target audience is again directed towards the teenagers as they are the people who normally buy these sorts of items.  The overall colours used in this magazine are white and red for the typography, black for Keri Hilsons costume and blue for the back ground. The text is written in red and white whom stands out as it is on the blue background, this contrast makes it easier for the audience to see and read the information giving.
The magazine “vibe” is targeted to the youth, from the ages 16 to 25. I say this because this age range is more aware of the genres R&B and hip-hop.  The sell lines show that the magazine is filled with gossip in the R&B and hip-hop genres. This connotes that the target audience is again aimed towards the mid teenagers, as they are interested in daily gossip.  The sell line “exclusive” shows the audience that the information in the magazine is new and would be very rare to find, which makes them eager to buy it. The colour scheme in the magazine is very basic as they only use two colours for the text. This makes it easier for the audience to see what the magazine has to offer them as they are not bombarded with different colours. The layout of the magazine shows the artist Keri Hilson in the middle, around her are all of the topics that are going to be covered in the magazine, this allows the audience to know what is going to be featured in the magazine before they buy it. The use of alliteration, “cool, crazy and crass,” also grabs the audience’s attention as it is very catchy. “Has been a very bad girl,” this sell line draws attention to the word very as it is written in bold red letters and is slightly bigger than the rest of the of the words, this shows stressing on the word very and it makes the audience think that Keri Hilson has done something remotely wrong. The main image is of Keri Hilson. The connotations of the main image are to show Keri Hilson as being seductive. The use of mis-en-scene allows us to see this as her body language and her clothing is very feminine and seductive which makes the reader automatically see her as the main image as they are drawn in by her appearance. Her clothing is very eye- catching as it compliments her woman figure which would most likely attract young teenage boys.

Front Cover Analysis Two

XXL is a hip hop magazine and was published by Harris Publications.  It was founded by former source staffers and other Harris Publication employees, as they wanted to produce their own magazine, including the genre hip hop and culture. The magazine past editors were Elliott Wilson and Datwon Thomas.
The mast head “Hip-Hop on a higher level,” catches the audience’s attention as it is use of alliteration. The title “XXL” is written in white and red on a background of black, these colour contrasts allows the title to stand out and as it is in capital letters, it stresses on the importance of the name. The main sell line is also written in red and white capital letters, showing the audience what the main topic of the magazine is going to be about. The sell lines of the magazine tells the reader what to expect in the magazine if bought, therefore, using original sell lines will convince the reader to buy the magazine because it is new, updated information and gossip. The sell line also includes different artists names, showing the audience which artists are featured in the magazine, which is beneficial to the audience because they know who is in the magazine before even buying it.
The magazine XXL specialises in the genre R&B and Hip Hop. The front cover shows us that the target audience for that magazine is around 16 to 25 years of age. I say this because the sell lines on the magazine would only interest people within that age range.  The design aspects also stress on the target audience. This is because the typography is very mature and based towards the target audience. The black background connotes sophistication and shows us that the target audience are more within the grown up age. The red and white text contrasts the background and so the audience can read the information given with ease. Both genders male and female social groups are represented on the front cover, mostly targeted towards the teenage age, as they are most likely to dress like the artists and would have a major interest in the genre of music that they produce.
The audience are being addressed by the use of rhetorical questions. This language device is very intriguing and makes the reader feel more involved as they make up the answer in the head and think about it. Another language device is used to address the audience and that is the use of alliteration. “What’s wrong with New York hip-hop? And the rebirth of rap royalty, this device hooks the reader in to reading the magazine.
The main image is of the artist’s Drake and Nicki Minaj. Drake is represented as a stereotypical man, who is strong and brave, the use of military clothing helps show this, as it gives of a masculine image. The “dog-tag” that he wears comes originally from the army as it was a way to recognise everyone, this again goes with his militant image. Drake’s short army like hair also connotes him image. Nicki Minaj is represented as a stereotypical woman. She is dressed in a leopard print gown, which is half coming of her left hand, revealing a Chinese tattoo. This shows conventions as many R&B and Hip-Hop artists have tattoos. For example, Eminem, Cheryl Cole, Dappy (N-Dubz) and Rihanna. Nicki Minaj is also stereotyped as a woman as she is wearing makeup; this is stereotype for most female artists because they always want to look good. Nicki is also wearing a vest like top, revealing her womanly figure. The gold jewellery in her hand connotes her being a wealthy artist. The magazine “XXL” adhere other typical R&B and Hip-Hop magazine front covers, this is because the layout and choice of around three colours are common in the genre of these magazines.

Front Cover Analysis Three

The magazine “classic fm” specialises in the classical genre.  It is published every month and is the printed organ of the British classical commercial radio station, Classic FM. The magazine is targeted towards the ages of around 40 plus.  I say this because the people featured on the magazine are dressed in an elderly smart manner. For example, the man on the right hand corner of the magazine is dressed in a suit, resulting to the magazine being targeted to the age range 40 plus. The magazine sell lines are very informational, and are very to the point. “100 CD’s, books, DVD’s rated,” this sell line makes the audience aware of what the magazine is going to contain before even buying it. The number “100,” stands out as it has a different background colour than the other words, this stresses on the number 100 and shows the audience what the motif is. “Plus FREE best live music guide!” is another sell line that draws the audience in as the word free is in capital letters, which can be seen as the magazine is giving away something original at no price. The sell line “Fiddler on the surf” is a pun on the film Fiddler on the roof; people who are interested in classical music would understand this pun and could refer back to it.
The masthead is in front of the main image, which is unusual. This is because in normal magazines, the masthead is behind the main characters face. The word “favourite” is written in red which tells the reader and convinces them that it is UK’s most wanted classical magazine. In the western culture we usually read from left to right a go down. The magazine has published to major features in the magazine that would convince the reader to buy the magazine. The “free CD” is written at the start of the magazine and it is the first thing that we see, and in the bottom right hand corner we see “plus FREE best live music guide!” which is the last thing we see. These sell lines encourage the audience to buy the magazine.
The main image is of Myleene Klass, she is represented as a sophisticated and respected woman. She also looks the age of the target audience, this could also convince the target audience to buy the magazine as they can refer to the woman’s maturity. She has natural looking makeup on, which also refers back to the target audience as they also look respectable like Myleene Klass in the picture. Her clothing is also very graceful, which refers back to the target audience as being more established and in the working environment. The way she is posed in the magazine goes with the target audience and the genre of the magazine, is say this because, if she was dressed in a very seductive way, then it wouldn’t combine with the music magazines genre.
The design of the magazine is very packed; nearly every part of the page is filled with information for the audience which shows that the magazine is targeted to the more mature age who likes reading. The main colours used in the magazine are red, white and black. The text is mostly written in red and black on a white background. This dissimilarity makes it easier for the audience to read the information given to them with no difficulty. The use of alliteration “My musical mission,” pulls the reader in and makes them feel more interested.  The font of the title “classic fm” is written very refine and elegant.
Myleene Klass is a guest editor in the magazine, this is a unique selling point of the magazine because no other classical music magazine will have this feature, and this may also persuade the audience to buy the magazine. The reader who buys s the magazine will be offered a free CD; this would induce the reader to buy it as they are getting a “two for one” offer, as when buying the magazine the reader is also getting a free CD. This could be because sales of magazines and CD’s are decreasing as the years go on, due to the use of internet, and by giving away a free CD could pull the reader in, to buy the magazine.
